NOVABLOOD return with the glorious Biblical, released 24th July on Old World New World reminding us of what well-crafted electronica should sound like: Big, bold and brooding. Make space on your record shelf next to your Depeche Mode, Talk Talk and Japan records because Biblical and forthcoming album Destroy the Magic rightfully deserve a place there.
Moving from a rigid two piece into a more fluid trio, NOVABLOOD songwriter-in-chief Mark Zowie takes over as lead vocalist. The results are stunning, the Carlisle supremo reprising singing duties in the same soulful way he did with Burn The Negative and We Take Polaroids. Any fan of David Sylvian will instantly get Zowie’s refined vocal delivery.
Biblical is a song that grabs your attention from the first second, delay synths of Old Testament proportions rising and engulfing you. This is what a synth hook would sound like if Martin Gore joined Underworld, the space between the notes allowing Biblical to breathe and bubble. Then comes the throbbing bass kick. By now, NOVABLOOD have you hooked. Mark Zowie adds the vocals, powerful yet restrained, like a gentle touch of the accelerator of a finely tuned sports car, lyrics and timbre in perfect harmony, building the already enormous suspense. “I’m waiting for the moment, I’m waiting here for you, I’m waiting for the time and now I know it’s overdue”
From here, Biblical builds with wonderfully crafted and precise production, NOVABLOOD creating a depth and space matched only by the true greats of electronica. There is so much to listen to here, Biblical is the gift that keeps giving. At nearly four and a half minutes in, the most beautiful lamenting guitar riff joins, flowing around Zowie’s voice like a duet. Hollywood director Clive Tonge (MARA) directs the excellent music video for Biblical, visually mirroring the vast sense of space, anticipation and high production value.
Mark Zowie tells us more: “Biblical is a brooding slice of electronica, a song about the breakdown of communication within what was a tight relationship. The panic-stricken foresight of a pending breakup.”
Biblical is a messenger angel, heralding the arrival of NOVABLOOD’s incredible album Destroy The Magic this autumn, brimming with the same level of electronic perfection as the opening single.
Look out for NOVABLOOD’s live tour dates in the second half of 2024. When performing live, they become a slick three piece, Paolo Di Liberto, also from Burn The Negative, reprises his live duties on backing vox & technology while Paul Newton expertly provides bass and guitars. Mark, Paolo and Paul will also be taking to the decks, spinning Electronica, Prog and House as they have done at Ministry Of Sound, Cream, UBER and BESTIVAL to name a few. NOVABLOOD: Your new favourite electronica band of 2024 and beyond.
